Atanu Das

DOB – 05 April 1992

Event – Archery Recurve Men’s Individual, Recurve Men’s Team

Atanu Das is one of India’s youngest and brightest prospects for an Olympic medal in Archery. He will be representing India in the Individual event at the Rio Olympics. In the year 2016 he won two world cup medals in the Mixed team event and one bronze medal in the Team event. His best individual performance is a 4th place finish at the World Cup in Turkey 2016

He won a bronze medal in Mixed Team event with Deepika Kumari in the World Cup in Colombia in 2013. He had also won 3 medals at the Asian Grand Prix in 2013 in Bangkok.

Atanu gave evidence of his talent at an early age when he became the sub-junior champion at his very first national competition in October 2007 at Jabalpur. His first International tour was in Turkey 2009 (Youth World Championship) followed by the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010.

Nobody in his family had been involved in sports, but his parents wanted to change that trend. His father, who runs a hotel in Puri, wanted him to pursue sports. He chose Archery because he believed it was an individual discipline and he alone will be responsible for winning and losing.

He started archery when he was 14 years old (December 2006) and his first coach was Mithu Da. A product of the Calcutta Archery Club, where he learnt the basics of the sport under coach Shantanu Dey, Atanu moved to Tata Archery Academy in 2008 where he came under the tutelage of the likes of Dharmendra Tiwary and Korean coach Lim Chae Wong. Atanu is currently a Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited employee posted in Kolkata.
